Background: Contrast induced nephropathy (CIN) is defined as the acute decline in renal function that occurs 48-72 hours after intravascular injection of contrast medium and may be affected by osmolality of the contrast media. Method and Results: This is a prospective cohort of 90 adult patients with contrast enhanced CT scan using iodixanol (n= 34) or iopamidol (n=56) with a normal baseline serum creatinine. CIN was defined as greater then 25% increase in serum Creatinine from baseline or a 0.5 mg/dL (44 umol/L increase in the absolute value within 48-72 hours of intravenous contrast administration. Results: There was no association between type of contrast media and incidence of CIN (p=0.39). There is no significant difference in the mean change in serum creatinine and eGFR (Cockcroft-Gault/MDRD) between the two groups (p=0.224,0.630, and 0.333 respectively).

Conclusion: The osmolality of contrast media is not associated with incidence of contrast induced nephropathy.
